| | MONDAY, JANUARY 30, 2012 | | KGY Radio Interview | KGY 96.9 FM in Olympia, WA aired an interview last weekend featuring yours truly talking up the new CD. When asked the inevitable "How would you describe your music to people to who haven't heard it?" question, I responded that we're a 90's rock band. Not only do I think we tend to favor my favorite bands from that era (guitar-driven rock songs), but we actually began playing in the 90's. The interviewer then asked if that meant that JBJr is a grunge rock band and I said yes, but without the grunge. It makes sense to me. You can hear the entire interview on our facebook page.
Cheers! | | Jan 30, 2012 @ 1:55 PM | 0 comment(s) |

The Joe Buck, Jr. Story
Joe Buck, Jr. is a Richmond, VA rock band with a decidedly 90's sound and feel. The band, now a five-piece, originated as a three-piece in the mid 1990’s. The name came from John Voigt's character in the film Midnight Cowboy. The character Joe Buck was a hard-luck loser who would do just about anything (badly) to be successful. The "Jr." was added to the band name later when it was discovered that there were other bands called Joe Buck (not to mention all the people named Joe Buck).
The band recorded a debut CD in 1996 titled Used to be Somebody with acclaimed producer John Morand (Sparklehorse, Cracker, Mint). In the midst of recording, JBJr got bumped because Hanson (yes, that Hanson) needed the studio to record a demo (JBJr also got bumped at mastering--I'll never forget the long hours one evening I had to listen to the demo of "MmmBop" before being told to come back the next night for JBJr mastering!). Neverthless, Used to be Somebody was positively received by local press and fans alike. The disc featured a cover of Sparklehorse’s “Someday I Will Treat You Good” which 9x Magazine dubbed “the cover of the year.” The cover was added at the last minute as Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) fell ill while on tour in Europe. The plan was for local bands to record versions of his songs to send to him in the hospital to let him know we were thinking of him. I don't know if the tape was ever made for Mark, but we added our cover to the CD.
Joe Buck, Jr. enjoyed a few years of success before calling it quits when thieves broke into the rehearsal space and made off with much of the equipment. It turned out that being in a rock band proved dissatisfying without guitars and amps. Several years later the group reunited to record a four-song EP appropriately titled Waitin’ Around. This CD showcased the band’s ability to create guitar-driven rock songs that blend with alt-country influences, all-the-while maintaining catchy toe-tapping rhythms and memorable melodies. Waitin' Around received noteworthy airplay on college radio across the country despite the fact that the band did not tour to support the latest release.
In 2010, Joe Buck, Jr. reunited with producer John Morand to begin work on a new CD. Three songs were recorded that summer with Paul Johnson (formerly of Waxing Poetics) adding lead guitar. Recording was finished in the summer of 2011 with the addition of Leslie Williams on lead guitar and Tom Beekman on keyboards. The new material also features horns. The additional instrumentation to Joe Buck, Jr.’s existing penchant for creative and tasteful indie rock takes the band’s recorded efforts to the next level. Plans for the near future include releasing the newest CD and supporting it with local and regional performances. The new CD, "Songs One Day We'll Used to Know" is currently receiving favorable airplay on FM radio across the country. The first single, "A Proposal", charted on Spins Tracking System (STS) the second week of January and has generated FMQB spins as well.
